Low-dose naltrexone: Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) has been demonstrated to reduce symptom severity in conditions such as fibromyalgia, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and complex regional pain syndrome.

Health Benefits:

  • Boosts endorphins: By temporarily blocking opioid receptors, LDN stimulates a compensatory increase in the production of endorphins. These natural hormones support pain relief and emotional resilience. Another way to put it:  LDN “tricks” the brain into producing more natural opioids which can lift your mood and dull pain. These effects can last for about 4-6 hours.
  • Modulates immune responses: LDN helps balance immune system activity, making it less reactive. This is why it’s often recommended for people with autoimmune conditions, which are triggered by an overreaction of the immune system that results in damage to the body’s own tissues and inflammation.
  • Has anti-inflammatory properties: LDN reduces inflammatory cytokines in the body, which are small proteins released by immune cells. Cytokines are key causes of inflammation-related conditions like endometriosis, adenomyosis (when tissue that lines the uterus grows into the muscular wall of the uterus), and other forms of chronic pain.

Discover the Conditions LDN is Helping People Manage Every Day

Multiple Sclerosis

Low-Dose Naltrexone (LDN) is gaining recognition as a promising approach for managing multiple sclerosis (MS). Originally investigated for its potential in cancer therapy, LDN is now being explored for its ability to help regulate the immune system and reduce inflammation. Its low-dose formulation has attracted interest for supporting individuals with autoimmune conditions.

Some individuals with Hashimoto’s have had great success taking LDN to help manage their symptoms. Specifically, some of the benefits Hashimoto’s patients may experience on LDN treatment include the following:

  • Reduced inflammation associated with Hashimoto’s
  • Reduced thyroid antibodies
  • Improved energy levels
  • Better sleep quality
  • Reduced depression and anxiety associated with autoimmune conditions
  • Reduced muscle and joint pain

When looking at IBD such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, has been known to show LDN being effective in reducing symptoms, improving endoscopic findings, and decreasing the need for steroids. LDN works by modulating overactive T-cell lymphocytes and mast cells, which are key players in the inflammatory process associated with these diseases.

LDN has shown to reduce the cells responsible for immune reactions and inflammation which may help to alleviate the symptoms of eczema. Research on LDN have also been successful in addressing pruritus (uncomfortable and intense itching) associated with eczema. LDN may offer a better alternative to long-term use of steroids in helping improve the symptoms of eczema like intense itching and inflammation.

Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) is a prescription medication that has been known to safely lower proinflammatory cytokines (including TNF-a, IL-1 and IL-6) and also reduce chronic pain. As such, it makes for an effective treatment option for Rheumatoid Arthritis sufferers—and fewer side effects of other treatment options. None of LDN’s side effects are thought to pose any long term health risks, and in fact may provide side-benefits.

Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) has been known to help alleviate fibromyalgia symptoms by reducing inflammation and modulating the immune response, particularly through its effects on microglial cells in the central nervous system.

Frequently asked questions

LDN is best classified as an immuno-regulator. It causes an increase in OGF levels – and OGF regulates proliferation of all cells, including immune cells (T-cells and B-cells). When immune cells are being produced in excess (leading to autoimmune conditions), OGF acts to slow down their proliferation. Whilst this can be construed as immune-suppression, it is most accurately described as immune-regulation.

If LDN is effective for the condition being treated, then generally it is taken long term. Since it does not cure the disease, but rather regulate immune system function, it is possible that some patients may experience a relapse when stopping it, whilst others do not. We recommend that you discuss this with your prescriber.

The benefit from LDN has been reported to be cumulative in some conditions such as multiple sclerosis and fibromyalgia, and the time it takes to achieve maximal benefit varies amongst individuals.

Some users experience benefit within days. Others report it taking much longer to see benefit; some users with conditions such as multiple sclerosis and fibromyalgia have reported a cumulative benefit over time- only seeing full benefit between 6-12 months after starting. Further complicating matters, sometimes a dose adjustment may change the benefit experienced. Given all these possibilities, an individual’s response time to LDN can vary.

The side effect identified in LDN that was taken at bedtime has been sleep disturbance (vivid dreams). Most LDN users who experience this side effect find that it disappears within the first few weeks. If it does persist, LDN can be taken in the morning instead, and this often eliminates this side effect.
